Week 1 Assignment

Part 1:

5-bharat-mata-mf-husain-painting-controversy

This is a painting by Indian artist MF Hussain. It is a narrative painting that depicts 'Bharat Mata' Mother India

The composition is a combination of triangle and portrait armatures. The painting demonstrates contrasting warm and cool color scheme that interact very well emphasizing the contour of the woman's body. The central figure shows that the artist has created similarity between two complex forms, outline of map of India and the woman figure. The shades of red juxtaposed with black adds depth. The converging lines and the concentration of unit forms bring attention to the top of the picture frame however usage of white color and the central placement makes the wheel most dominant. The sun and the curve lines in white brings some harmony.

The Two Fridas, c.1939 By Frida KahloThe two Fridas 1939

This is a painting by Mexiacan surreal artist Frida Kahlo. This is a twin portrait with equal emphasis on both the characters. The painting shows symmetry and repetition of two forms. The usage of two distinct color schemes and similar forms shows contrast and similarities between two central characters. The heart seem more prominent on the white. The blood stains catches attention however is subtly blending with the equal distribution of red floral embroidery.

Part 2

I chose a lamp, a key and a light bulb to create my composition. I created the outline of these three objects from their 3D models using the mesh outline option.

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 11.26.31 PMFor all my compositions I used 3:4 frame proportion.

In my first composition I arranged the forms diagonally in descending order of the object lengths.Composition 1- diagonal

Composition 1- diagonal viewlineFor the abstract representation I arranged the object in similar directions. I titled and mirrored one object to align them along the diagonal structural line.

abstract 1- diagonalIn my second composition I used radiating lines armature and putting the shifting the divergence point towards from the center of the picture frame.

composition 3 without view lines

composition 3- radialIn the abstract  representation I moved the individual forms closer and united the forms to add movement towards right. The divergence point here moved slightly towards lower left.

abstract 3In my third composition I arranged the forms using the combination of 'L' and 'S' armatures to focus the attention towards the angle between key and the bulb.

composition 2- L and S

composition 2 L and S view linesFor the abstract representation I used positive figures on negative ground.
