The “readings” for this week consist of 3 articles:
- Mindless Computing: Designing Technologies to Subtly Influence Behavior
- Minding the Mind (First 4-5 pages, rest are optional)
- Iowa Gambling Task
We have listed some optional readings for inspiration as well. Please read the 3 papers and design a system for augmenting cognition, affect or behavior that uses non-conscious pathways (reference some things you learned from the readings in your design slide) in this document. As an example you could rethink one of your previous design sketches in a way that does not require active conscious interaction for achieving the augmentation.
In addition, please take a look at the profiles of your colleagues on the course website so that we can start forming small teams of 2-3 people for the group projects.
Week 3: Assignment due Tuesday September 21th, 2021 12 noon

- Thinking Fast and Slow (video)
- Visualizing each of the 188 known confirmation biases (on Medium)
- Sensation: The New Science of Physical Intelligence (video)
- Mel Slater: becoming a better person through VR embodiment
We have listed some optional readings for inspiration as well. Please watch/read the required ones and submit ½ page with some reflections on what you learned/found interesting in this form.
Similar to last week, create one slide with your idea for a system that could aid in reasoning and decision making in this document. This can be high level and does not necessarily have to be realizable with today’s technologies.

We have listed some optional readings for inspiration as well. Please watch the required ones and submit ½ page with some reflections on what you learned/found interesting in the videos as it relates to our class theme at this form.
Second, create a personal profile in the form of a Google slide so that others in the class can get to know you and possibly approach you regarding the final project. Examples of profiles can be found at the top of the document.
Third, create one slide with your idea for a system that could augment or support some target user group with an attention or memory related issue. This can be high level and does not necessarily have to be realizable with today’s technologies. Examples can be found at the top of the Google Slides document where you will upload your design.
