Given set changes in parameters, what are the trends for motion in affective space?
How do those trends change depending on the initial affective state?

mapping of music parameters:

The Affective Listener used music parameters pertaining to instrument layer and overall complexity:

instrument layering: frequency domain

complexity: time domain

Although the axes have some interdependency, music for the project was composed and arranged to accentuate contrast. The layering-complexity map provided us with clearly audible differences when moving along either axis.

mapping of affective states:

To locate affective responses in a space, the Affective Listener employed arousal-valence:

Based on our interpretation of how arousal-valence would map to music, we selected adjectives for each quadrant. We discovered later that several other researchers had used almost the exact same set of adjectives. (North and Hargreaves, 1997).
