Ants

A colony of ants forages for food, creating trails with chemical pheromone. Each ant follows simple, local rules, but the colony as a whole acts in a seemingly sophisticated way.

Termites

Termites gather wood chips into piles -- without any centralized "leader." A good example of organized, global patterns arising from simple, local rules.

Flocks

Fire

Fire spreads through a forest. Small changes in tree density can sharply influence the spread of the fire. Uses only patches, no turtles.

Rabbits

A simple ecosystem with rabbits and grass. Exhibits classic oscillating behavior of predator-prey systems.

Slime

Slime-mold cells aggregate into clusters, using chemical pheromone. Defines uphill procedure that makes turtles cd follow a gradient.

Epidemic

A disease spreads among the turtles. Demonstrates exponential growth.

Grass

Grass grows using the sun's energy

Flies
