Embroidery on Net
By Ellan
Helpful hints for embroidering on net:
Fabric Stability
Since net has a very open structure it needs to be stabilized even more than a traditional woven fabric for use in the embroidery machine. I sandwiched 1 layer of net between 2 layers of water - soluble stabilizer and then sandwiched that unit between 2 sheets of fusible interfacing.
Stitch Density
It is also important to modify the settings in the DRAWings4 program:
The settings that I used were: density .8mm, compensation 1.0mm, underlay - net
This makes the stitches less packed together, wider and provides 2 lines of stitching underneath the zigzag rather than the single default value.
The overall pattern successfully embroidered about 50% before the fabric ripped (later I realized that a different underlay patter was selected for this part of the pattern which was much more demanding on the fabric) - I then patched it with another layer of net and interfacing attached with fusible web and continued the design.

The paper interfacing was removed to reveal the net and stabilizer. Some of the paper still remains but can be removed with care. Even the places where the net substrate ripped are still held together with the embroidery structure.
The final product (still draft concept) has a lot of potential for light and interesting jewelry.
