Actuating Textiles

Throughout this course I have explored functional fabrics. Most recently I have detailed how to incorporate materials that motivate forces and movement. I propose for my final project I take a step back and examine whether incorporating electromagnets into fabrics is a feasible approach to actuation.

To begin, I will model the electromagnetic yarn that I built for the assignment "Yarn" to improve on design by increasing the resultant force while decreasing the consumed power. A design goal is to determine the design parameters necessary to lift the yarn's own weight while limiting the current to be the current rating of the gauge of wire used. Once comfortable with the specifications calculated I will compare these specifications to Nitinol Wire (an industry standard for muscle wire). I will then present case studies of possible mechanisms and extensions into the applicability of this work to motor and generator applications.

The time line below represents the order of the main components of the final project. The time line finishes significantly before May 12th for personal scheduling reasons.
