Kwan Queenie Li

Kwan Queenie Li

MIT Art Culture & Technology

An interdisciplinary artist from Hong Kong, my practice explores art as the (alternative?) means to truth, despite the intricate proposition of what truth renders in the exuberance of ‘para-fictions’ today as parsed by Carrie Lambert-beatty.

Interests: How will the prevalence of deepfakes further deteriorate the indexicality of images, the subject that I primarily work with as a visual artist, and conjures what Baudrillard addressed as a ‘new linguistic reality’? I am also interested in weaving the threads between archival images in the history of photography, and generative images in the development of new intelligence.

Sarah Kovar

Sarah Kovar

Harvard Master in Design Engineering

I am currently a second year Master in Design Engineering student at Harvard. I am president of the Harvard Behavioral Insights Group. I have 5+ years of experience in strategy consulting for government and commercial clients with Deloitte Consulting LLP. I have specialized in applying behavioral insights to craft experiments to enhance evidence-based decision making and policy designs. I am passionate about understanding human behavior to help us make better decisions and correct for biases in ourselves and the algorithms we create. I am also fascinated by how governments can better predict future technological trends for social good, and understand its ethical, societal, and national security impacts.

Interests: I’m interested in how deepfakes impact democracy, public discourse (disinformation campaigns), diplomacy, and national security. My background is in strategy and applied behavioral science in government (primarily United States federal agencies).

Katarina Richter-Lunn

Harvard GSD

Katarina was born in Spain and grew up in a multitude of European countries before moving to the U.S. to study at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where she received her Bachelor of Architecture in 2016. Over the past five years, she has worked at a multitude of offices such as, Snøhetta , Arup, IwamottoScott, etc and recently left her position of three years at Gehry Partners in Los Angeles. She is currently pursuing a Master of Design Studies in Technology at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where her research focuses on the intersection of design, psychology, and neuroscience to address mental well-being in our environment.

Interests: I am interested in how machine learning/ deepfakes can be used in psychology, neuroscience and design to improve peoples well-being and perception of space.

Sana Sharma

Sana Sharma

Harvard GSD

I design and create experiences that connect people with emerging technologies. In both industry and academic settings, I’ve worked with ML engineers and generative AI researchers to incorporate scientific context and human needs into new tools, web apps, and educational experiences. My relevant skills include human subjects research, UX/UI design, HTML/CSS/Javascript, and prior experience with both Python and training/working with GANs.

Interests: I am very interested in the intersection of HCI and AI, especially generative algorithms. As part of my current research, I have developed an experience that allows people to learn more about GANs by acting as the discriminator during a GAN’s training (link: https://ganland-adventures.glitch.me/). My hypothesis is that immersion and interaction can be used to help demystify generative algorithms and spur more productive conversation about their use and misuse. I am hoping to build upon and test this hypothesis, as well as to apply it to other relevant topics, such as connecting immersion to broader conversations about the ethical ramifications of GANs.

Rob Lewis

Rob Lewis

MIT Media Lab

I’m a student in Roz Picard’s Affective Computing group interested in how we can use technology to improve mental health services. I have an academic background in computer science and chemistry, as well as several years work experience in tech consulting (data science, project management, etc.)

Interests:

* Generative algorithms for bio / affective signals (++ bio / affective responses *to* deepfakes)

* Generative algorithms for audio (e.g. music creation)

* Style transfer (especially if this is possible across modalities – e.g. apply an individuals affective signals to audio/image creation) * Generative algorithms for synthetic data creation (e.g. to facilitate research while protecting user privacy)

* Generative algorithms with geometric deep learning models (quite a new area of deep learning so perhaps limited generative work here so far?)

* Digital techniques and infrastructure for verifying “real” from “fake” content (e.g. is there a way to add a digital watermark to content?)
