  • Stack Overflow and Stack Overflow Careers 2.0
    Very successful Q&A site for software developers, that grew into de facto knowledge hub for the community. Careers 2.0 was created for employers as a better (more targeted) way to find developers, using the data collected through their participation in SO.
  • Stack Exchange (applying the stack overflow model to other domains)
    Running on same software as Stack Overflow, SE offers free hosted solutions to projects are able to build thriving Q&A communities. Interesting bootstrapping model that requires a number of performance goals before a new site is fully hosted.
  • Wikipedia (Talk pages) “Collaboratively edited, multilingual, free Internet encyclopedia supported by the non-profit Wikimedia foundation. Its 30 million articles in 287 languages, including over 4.3 million in the English Wikipedia, are written collaboratively by volunteers around the world.”
  • Duolingo “Free language-learning website and crowdsourced text translation platform. The service is designed so that, as users progress through the lessons, they simultaneously help to translate websites and other documents.”
  • P2PU/Learning Creative Learning An online course for designers, developers and educators. Offered by the MIT Media Lab & P2PU, it’s based on a course Mitch Resnick teaches at the Media Lab.
  • Skillshare “A global community where you can learn real-world skills from incredible teachers.”
  • Edufire “Distance education platform and social network service for live tutoring through text and video chat. It was originally promoted as a language learning engine, however, it has expanded to offer preparation for tests such as the ACT, SAT, and GRE.”
  • Mentormob “Provides the best learning experience online by guiding you through the web’s best content, organized and ordered by users like you.”
  • Crowdcrafting “Online assistance in performing tasks that require human cognition, knowledge or intelligence such as image classification, transcription, geocoding and more!”
  • Galaxy Zoo “Interactive project that allows the user to participate in a large-scale project of galaxy research: classifying millions of galaxies found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.”
  • Fold.it “An online puzzle video game about protein folding. The game is part of an experimental research project, and is developed by the University of Washington’s Center for Game Science in collaboration with the UW Department of Biochemistry. The objective of the game is to fold the structure of selected proteins as well as possible, using various tools provided within the game.”
  • DIY.org “DIY is a place for kids to share what they do, meet others who love the same skills, and be awesome. The big idea is that anyone can become anything just by trying – we all learn by doing. With skills each of us can build our world.”
  • Instructables “Instructables is a place that lets you explore, document, and share your DIY creations. Instructables is a website specializing in user-created and uploaded do-it-yourself projects, which other users can comment on and rate for quality.”
  • Chef Hangouts “A place where you’ll meet chefs from all over the planet as they lead cooking classes via Google+ Hangouts, where up to 10 people, can talk face to face via their webcams. Learn chefs’ skills, their recipes and techniques.”
  • Unhangouts An open source platform for running large scale online un-conferences. It uses Google Hangouts to create as many small sessions as needed, and help users find others with shared interests. Unhangouts are community-based learning instead of top-down information transfer.
  • Scratch Educational programming language and multimedia authoring tool that can be used by pupils, teachers, and parents for a range of educational and entertainment constructivist projects from math and science projects, including simulations and visualizations of experiments, recording lectures with animated presentations, to social sciences animated stories, and interactive art and music.
