Kadolph, S. (2007), Textiles (11th or 10th Edition), Prentice Hall, Upper Saddle River, NJ

Materials
There is a $35 materials fee for this course. (Please give a check made out to “MIT” to Emily.) This helps to cover the cost of consumable materials, including your vey own kit, which we have assembled to help you complete many of the assignments. Additionally, you should purchase a multimeter of your own. (We recommend this one. You can also order a similar meter more cheaply from Amazon.)

Grading
Weekly assignments: 60%
Final project: 30%
Class participation: 10%

Each project will receive 2 “grades”, one for the project & one for its documentation. For both categories, we will give you one of 3 marks: a check (X), check + (X+), or check- (X-). A (X) is an indication that you did a good job on the assignment, a (X+) that your work was truly extraordinary & a (X-) that your work could be improved. Evaluation of projects will focus on the following:

  • craftsmanship (how carefully and thoughtfully was the project constructed?)
  • concept (how original and compelling is the conceptual design?)
  • form/aesthetics (how compelling is the aesthetic design?)
  • functionality (does it work?)
